Fivemile Butte Lookout

In mid-December we spent 4 days at a fire lookout just east of Mt. Hood on Fivemile Butte.  You have to make reservations 6 months in advance, so you never know what the weather is going to be like......
and that's how our our original plan of a xc ski trip turned into more of a car camping adventure!

Initially, I was disappointed that snow was so scarce, but honestly, I would rather have the clear skies and sweeping panoramas.  The tower stands 40 feet high....so if you are going to climb up and down multiple times a day then being up so high should have it's rewards.  And, lucky us, it did!

Looking west is the peak of Mt. Hood.

Here's the view looking north with Mt. Adams standing impressive and Mt. Rainier in the distance.  The eastern view was the primary vista looking out over the high desert plateau into eastern Oregon.  You could also see Mt. St. Helens from the road.  During our trip we experienced a weather inversion, so it was clear and warmer up high and cloudy and cold in the valleys.

The lookout has a little pulley and basket for hauling firewood up to the cabin.

The cabin is a 14 x 14 square foot room with windows all the way around.  There is a wood stove for heat and a propane cook stove and oven.  There are some rustic furnishings including a table, two chairs and double bed.  There is a "sink" which functions as a wash basin.  Any water needs to hauled in (or there needs to be snow to melt).

I love this photo of our sweet little Daisy pretending that she sleeps at the foot of our bed.  Ha!  The reality is that Daisy finds the loft of sleeping bags irresistible and she's also a magnet for body heat.

Sunset on the volcanoes.

An unplanned bonus of our trip was the coinciding full lunar eclipse.
Here's a shot of the beautiful moon rise.

View of the lookout illuminated by the full moon.  We got up at 5am to watch the eclipse.  We took a bunch of photos, but even with the moon fully eclipsed it didn't translate well on the long exposure.
The next morning was another blue bird day!

After a little morning stroll, we headed back to prepare for company.

My little helper.

The cabin would get so warm from the solar heat that we would keep the windows open during the day.  Clear view of Mt. Adams from inside.

Dave and Steph arrive!  They spent one night with us.

Steeeep stairs!

We took an afternoon walk through the woods along the Lookout Trail
(what we would have used if the roads were impassable).

Dusk setting in.

Sunset glow on the horizon.

While Jonah slept, we took the party downstairs and enjoyed keeping warm fireside.

What? Another beautiful day?!  We got so lucky!

Good Morning Mt. Adams

Jonah was a rockstar.  There's nothing like sleeping 4 people together in a tiny room to test your baby's awesomeness.  He did great!

One amazing perk of not backpacking all your supplies in is the ability to go gourmet.  We ate very well.  Our breakfast menu included Applesauce Buckwheat Pancakes with Fresh Berries and Honey.  Yum!

Awwww.

Jonah's got the coy, peekaboo look down pat.  Such a cutie!

It was a great trip.  We really had fun!

6 Months!

Sweet Jonah turns 6 months old today.  It is amazing how half a year can seem both short and long at the same time.  I can say without question that this time has been the most rewarding 6 months of my life.  Jonah is very quickly turning into a little boy and I marvel at his rapid development.  I love celebrating all of his accomplishments.  He is able to shimmy and scoot his way toward toys and rolls over from front to back and back to front with ease.  He can sit up, but he almost always ends up on his tummy after a few minutes.  I stay close because you never know if he will have a slow-motion topple or a spastic face plant.  His disposition is very cheerful and easygoing---he can entertain himself for quite a while on his play mat.  I am so thankful to have such a happy and healthy boy.

Jonah's 6 Month Schedule:

7:00am :: Wake up, then breakfast (all meals are still exclusively breast milk)
7:45am :: Bouncy Chair - Jonah will play with his bears while we make and eat breakfast together
9:00am :: nap
~ We often run errands during Jonah's 9am nap or we will take Daisy for a walk ~
9:30am -11:00am  :: Play time on tummy, reading, & activity mat
11:00am :: Lunch
Noon - 2:00pm :: nap
2:00 - 2:45pm :: More playing
3:00pm :: snack
3:30pm :: Practice sitting up or take a walk to get the mail
4:30pm :: Jonah is put in his swing where he falls asleep.  I don't let him nap longer than 15 minutes.
5:00pm :: Tidy up, fold laundry, get ready for bath time
6:00pm :: Dinner
7:00pm :: Sleep
10:00pm :: Snack and then sleep again until morning

Photos from our weekend adventure on Mt Hood coming soon....

Florence, Oregon

For Thanksgiving we traveled to Florence, Oregon to spend time with Jonah's grandparents (GranMama & Popeye).  We stay at the rental cabins they oversee on Siltcoos Lake.  The cabins are owned by Lane Community College and, in addition to being charming, are located right on the lake shore and 15 minutes away from the Pacific Ocean and sand dunes.
Here are some favorite landscape photos from our time visiting the Oregon Coast.

Fairy Dust

The frost was beautiful on my walk this morning.
I absolutely love to hear a soft crunch with each footstep.

 This road is the old hwy 30 between Hood River and Mosier which is just reserved for pedestrian and bike traffic now.  Normally this is a well-used trail, but this morning Jonah, Daisy, and I were the only ones brave enough to bundle up and enjoy cold and sunshine.  These photos were taken with my phone so the resolution is terrible, but you get the idea....

....it was just beautiful!

Mornings

Sleeping through the night is absolutely wonderful and we've been enjoying that luxury for months now.  We wake Jonah up at 7am every morning....and he's pretty used to that schedule so he's usually awake already.  We will often hear him cooing and talking to himself from his room before we go in to "wake" him.  Lately, I've been lingering in bed--which is something I love to do when the house is cold and the down comforter is so warm.  My little darling will often join me.  He's super snuggley in the mornings and is content to get cuddles & kisses and play peekaboo with the bedding.
It's a pretty nice way to start the day.

Teeth!

Okay, so you can't even see it in these photos, but Jonah got his first tooth today!  His bottom central incisor is just poking through (the one on his right).  So far he doesn't seem to be affected by the teething.  He's been in a good mood and on his normal routine.

I know these photos look ridiculously posed, but Jonah honestly just loves to grin.
If you are making eye contact, he's smiling.

For months now we've been enjoying the most glorious weather so it has been easy for me to keep spending the afternoons outside playing.  Jonah is sooooo close to being able to sit up all by himself.  His balance is getting good and he can fake it with a little support.

A haiku for Jonah -

This rocking chair was made by Jeff, a woodworker from Bellingham, Washington.  It is a very creative design; the chair is made with 6 pieces and each piece fits together like a puzzle.....
and voila, a baby rocking chair!

Happy Thanksgiving!

One of the things I love best about Thanksgiving in the Pacific Northwest is embracing the transition from Autumn to Winter.  This year, we are spending the holiday in Florence, Oregon.  Although we will be away, I wanted to share a few pictures of home during this spectacular time of year.
These are the golden leaves of our Coral Bark Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum 'Sango-kaku'
which was one of the first trees I planted when we moved here.

Our front entrance is flanked by two Burning Bushes (Euonymus alatus) that turn bright red when it starts to get chilly.

Looking out across the Columbia River,
you can see speckles of yellow deciduous trees on the hillside of Oregon.

Our view is always changing.  We really enjoy seeing the river traffic passing by.
Every day I am thankful that we get to live in such a special place and that I get to share this life with my loving husband and darling son.

Happy Thanksgiving to you all!
